AVL Demonstration - Mysti Nichols

AVL - Professional Development Collection Demonstration

The Alabama Virtual Library provides a very extensive list of databases. One of the search engines that I find most interesting is the Professional Development Collection which is found in the Colleges and Universities tab. This database allows one to search for journal articles and videos on various professional development topics easily and quickly with resource refinements. This could be a very useful tool in any profession especially right now when we cannot attend conferences and workshops as planned.

  1. I like that you chose a database we can possibly use for PD during the COVID-19 outbreak - that's really useful. I went to Professional Development Collection, and, thanks to your demo, I found it very easy to use. The database seems simple, and I found the limiters to be very helpful. However, I did notice that, although there are videos available in the database, I couldn't seem to find a way to narrow my search to only videos. That seems odd to me, but it's possible I just missed it.

  2. Great idea to focus on professional development. This will be especially helpful as we try to prepare for the uncertainties of the fall term. I used your resource to search for online teaching and learning strategies and found some interesting articles that may be beneficial for teaching online. Like Robyn, I would like to be able to narrow to videos only.

  3. Like many other educators, my original professional development plans for this summer have been canceled. I am happy to see that I can utilize this resource to help fulfill my PD obligations. I found the database to be easy to use and easy to refine my search. I searched for information on communicating with parents. I hoped to find some up-to-date tips on how to better communicate with parents.
