I feel that Gale: General OneFile can be a very useful database in the classroom because of the wide array of information a teacher can find on it. Typically you would want to use this if you needed to find credible information on a certain event or subject. I would recommend this for the High School setting simply because a student would need to know exactly what they are searching for and would need to read more in-depth journals, magazines, books, etc. General OneFile also tells you how many words are in the article so that can be very helpful when choosing whether or not a student would be able to handle the workload. It also links to Google Classroom, so if a teacher wants to share it with their class they can easily do that. I could very easily use many articles and create document-based questions that I could post on Google Classroom as well as the link from General OneFile link (which easily syncs on Google Classroom). All in all, this is a great research tool and can easily be used for ELA classes.
Great video demonstration. I loved learning about this resource, as it is not one that I would be looking for on purpose due to teaching 3rd grade. But, what a great resource for high school students working on a research project! You provided in depth information on how to search within the database. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the response Ashlee. I was very pleased to have come across this while exploring AVL, and it's going to be great to use in the classroom!
DeleteI can definitely see the benefits of using it in high school! The fact that it goes so easily with your google classroom is a win-win! You could have students read the article and ask questions or have them search for an article. This way they are learning all the digital literacy skills needed. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYes I plan on doing that! I'm excited that I was able to find this and I should be able to easily transition this into my classroom. Thank you for the response.
DeleteThank you for sharing, Jonathan! This resource seems like fantastic option for high school students to learn how to search for credible sources. Gale General One File reminds me a lot of EBSCO Host, so it's great that high school students could get a chance to interact with a database similar to one they might use in college. The ability to share articles in Google Classroom is awesome--not only does it allow easy access for students, but it also avoids printing hundreds of pieces of paper to give the article to students in hard copy. Plenty of reason for a high school educator to use this resource!
ReplyDeleteI agree 100%. I think it will be very beneficial in helping students actually research topics, and could a great tool to help them in the future as well like you stated. Thank you for the response!
DeleteAs a middle school history teacher myself I easily see how I could use this in my classroom. I have explored this resource and plan to use it to challenge my students that are are a higher level and need more rigor. Using this like you did for google classroom can make a great assignment for students. I saw there was a tab on 9/11 and I plan to use this next year on that day since many of my students have much of a connection with that day.
