Geogebra
(CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1) Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).
- The purpose of the Geogebra application is to make math for meaningful for students by manipulating math concepts in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional plane and draw connections to real-world problems.
- The cost of the application is free.
- It is intended for middle to high school aged students.
- It is compatible with most handheld devices, tablets, and available as a website.
- The third party review site, Common Sense, is a credible source because they are an independent, non-profit, research backed trusted by millions of parents and educators empowering the next generation of digital citizens.
Blooket
(ISTE Standards for Students) 1. Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
- The purpose of the Blooket application is to review content specific questions to deepen learning.
- There are a variety of costs to this application. There is a free version which allows teachers to create and host games. The paid plans are $4.99 monthly or $35.88 yearly and add enhanced reporting, copying of question sets, priority support, exclusive features and early event access, and student game tokens.
- It is intended for elementary and middle school aged students.
- It is compatible with most handheld devices, tablets, but most compatible as a website.
- The third party review site, Common Sense, is a credible source because they are an independent, non-profit, research binding site trusted by millions of parents and educators empowering the next generation of digital citizens.
Desmos
- The purpose of the Desmos application is to create an inquiry approach to mathematics, manipulating different variables to change what they choose about a graph and transform their understanding of expressions, equations, and geometric properties into dynamic graphs.
- The cost of this application is free.
- This application is intended for middle and high school aged students.
- It is compatible with most handheld devices, tablets, but most compatible as a website.
- The third party review site, Common Sense, is a credible source because they are an independent, non-profit, research binding site trusted by millions of parents and educators empowering the next generation of digital citizens.
My Choice
As a mathematics educator, the application that I find most useful is Desmos. Desmos and Geogebra are very similar, but Desmos has all of the capabilties of Geogebra and then some. Desmos has the option to have a graphing calculator, scientific calculator, dynamic geometry software tools, and many other additions. Desmos is also rated higher than Geogebra according to Common Sense Education which is rated most user friendly by educators and parents alike. It has the capability to transform mathematics to make models concrete, and applicable to the real-world. It can be used as a tool to develop deep conceptual understanding of mathematics concepts and develop mathematical thinkers that can apply their understanding to future careers.
